Earlier this year, we learned that Amazon plans to open mini department stores full of clothing, household items, and electronics, plus facilitate an easier return and replacement system for its customers. In addition, these stores could have Amazon’s own private-label clothing line, high-tech dressing rooms, and other conveniences, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The idea here is that Amazon could be looking to reimagine the entire department store experience. From helping you shop for and find clothes with app suggestions, QR codes, and even high-tech dressing rooms for ease of use and efficiency.

Imagine walking through a store, scanning QR codes for everything you want to try on, then having an employee (or eventually, a robot) bring them to your room. From here, you can try them on or use a touchscreen inside your room to suggest new sizes or a color change.

Then, in typical Amazon fashion, based on what you choose, the app will suggest other similar options of what others bought. This information is subject to change and is only rumors for now. That said, the company isn’t new to trying different approaches. A few years back, it sold the Echo Look camera, designed to go in a closet and give you fashion advice and such.

The first rumors of Amazon department stores started floating around earlier this year. Suggesting the online giant wanted to open “mini department stores” roughly 30,000 square feet in size, or about the same footprint as a Whole Foods or Kohls.

Amazon still hasn’t remotely confirmed anything about its department store aspirations, but with how fast it’s opening small retail stores and other shops, it wouldn’t surprise us to see this happen eventually.
