Violet Evergarden the Movie

The official website for the Violet Evergarden franchise announced today that the award-winning Violet Evergarden: The Movie will get its Japanese home release on August 4 in three different editions. One of those editions, the Blu-ray special edition, will mark the first-ever release of a Kyoto Animation work in 4K and HDR, utilizing the Dolby Vision HDR format conversion that saw the film be the first original anime film to be screened in Dolby Vision’s HDR format.

All editions of the film, including the regular Blu-ray and DVD editions, come with a special case, a color booklet, two types of letters by Violet, four cards that were theatrical gifts, a card-sized version of the film poster, and cards drawn by director Taichi Ishidate.

The special edition will come with both the UHD and normal Blu-ray disc, with the UHD version having the Dolby Vision version of the film that comes with Dolby Atmos surround sound (though does note that if you don’t have a sound system compatible with the sound format, it will play on regular speakers as well). Physically, the special edition also comes with a booklet featuring interviews with the staff and director discussing the Dolby Cinema upgrade and production process.

No art from any of the releases has been unveiled at the moment.

Violet Evergarden the Movie opened in Japanese theaters on September 18 and when we last checked in, had made 2.1 billion yen (US$20.23 million) at the Japanese box office. We reviewed the film when it released. The Dolby Vision version opened separately on November 13 in 7 theaters across Japan.
