#RECS: 5 Great Anime To Watch In Bed Before You Go To Sleep

#RECS: 5 Great Anime To Watch In Bed Before You Go To Sleep
One Piece

Since I started watching anime consistently again back in 2018, the physical act of hunkering down under the covers with phone in hand and catching up with all my favorite anime protagonists before bed has been a form of self-therapy. For a brief 20-or-so-minutes — or, more realistically, several 20-minute intervals — I can recede into a protective cover and escape into the imaginative journeys of my favorite shows, detaching myself from any stressors and offering room to breathe. This is my nightly routine.

While I do use these times to catch up with the latest simulcasts (World Trigger Season 3, anyone?), I find myself returning to a few shows regularly when I’m looking to wind down with something familiar. Not all are peaceful or exude tranquility — some are straight-up action series — but they all have provided me feelings of comfort that are unique for each one. Whether you decide to watch it before bed or during some other time of rest, I hope these anime bring you as much joy as they have done for me. Cheers!

Natsume Yujin-cho

Natsume Yujin-cho, Natsume's Book of Friends

Starting on-brand for “calm and peaceful anime to watch before bed” (before the wheels fall off later), Natsume Yujin-cho is a wonderfully told story about a boy who can communicate with spirits (or yokai). In both its art style and pace of storytelling, Natsume’s Book of Friends can be considered the perfect bedtime story. The animation is soft and dreamy. Each episode is primarily self-contained as a vignette, making it easily digestible. (But also acceptable if you accidentally doze off mid-way through!) Like most other slice-of-life anime, it includes heartfelt moments in between chuckle-worthy conversation and masterful world-building. And, if you were looking to learn a little more about Japanese folklore, this show will scratch that itch.

Hinamatsuri

Series background

As another slice-of-life anime told in shorts, Hinamatsuri is a hysterical anime that follows kid physic Hina and yakuza Nitta, their day-to-day life, as well as their relationships with friends and family. Before my anime-watching days, I fell asleep to reruns of Bob’s Burgers; Hinamatsuri is the closest anime I’ve seen that captures the same humor with heartwarming earnestness. Much like the other shows on this list, I prefer anime where the characters are all likable, Hinamatsuri is no exception. Gutpunchingly funny and surprisingly relatable (for a show about psychics and yakuza), this is the kind of show I watch at night to ensure I wake up in the morning with a smile.

One Piece

Series background

As someone who was late to the game and only started watching this show in 2018, I can attest that, for the better part of a year and a half, binging 4-5 episodes (a conservative estimate) of One Piece a night was my routine. Often, I found it difficult to stop watching, and, unsurprisingly, this was the reason for many late nights during that time. So, I guess in that respect, maybe it’s not the best anime to watch before bed. However, while I can’t help with managing self-control, I felt obligated to include it in my list because of just how deep it sucked me in. Like reading Treasure Island on anime-sized steroids, One Piece has consistently built one of the most imaginative and fantastic worlds I have ever had the pleasure to see, from the diverse crew of the Straw Hats to the detailed lore of its world. If you’re looking for a show with a lot of content to keep you busy, look no further. With over 1,000 episodes under its belt, it will undoubtedly keep a new viewer entertained for many days to come.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!

Series background

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! highlights the journey of three high-school students as they work together to create and manage their anime club. While the story is fantastic and the characters are easily lovable, what makes this show special for me is how beautifully they pair detailed animation with vibrant, ambient instrumentals.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve (for better or worse) become more pragmatic-minded, and, as a result, my imaginative side has turned to mush. When I first watched Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, I was immediately reminded of my dreams from childhood. Wildly fantastic, oozing with frenetic energy, animation studio Science Saru was seemingly able to visually capture the effortlessness and joy of the creative mind at work. On every rewatch, this show brings me back to a previous state of mind and, at the very least, gives me something new to dream about (mushy imagination and all).

Chihayafuru

Series background

Chihayafuru follows the life of high-schooler Chihaya Ayase as she strives to become the female grandmaster of karuta, a reaction-time-based card game involving poems from classical Japanese literature. As one of my absolute favorite anime, Chihayafuru is one I often revisit, especially before bed. With a dynamic cast of characters, a compelling yet straightforward plot, and a delicately crafted soundtrack that complements the animation, it’s the perfect blend of comfort and excitement and precisely what I’m looking for at the end of a long day. As you can probably tell by now, I’m a sucker for earnest and wholesome anime — they’re my proverbial glass of warm milk to lull me to sleep at night. However, Chihayafuru isn’t just another feel-good anime to put on in the background; it is a show that has moved me emotionally more than any other show I’ve seen to date and continues to do so on each rewatch.

Thanks for taking the time to read about anime I love to watch before bed. Please let me know in the comments below any anime I should check out, as well! Until next time.
