In its statement, Khara said that those acts came “in the form of misinterpretations of the film content and related press articles” and stemmed from “personal interpretations, inference, or dissatisfaction with content that does not meet individual wishes.”
The studio also said that it will not hesitate to take legal action and to seek damage compensation. It will report domestic cases to the National Police Agency of Japan, while in international cases, it will make reports to the respective countries’ investigative agencies.
In an NHK documentary that was released in March (via Anime News Network), Evangelion director Hideaki Anno spoke of internet threads in which people debated on “the best way to kill” him. This was after the original 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion series had first transformed into a social phenomenon.
The final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time was released on March 8 after multiple delays. The movie broke IMAX opening day records in Japan and became the top-grossing entry in the Rebuild series.
