This week, we learned that the popular Raspberry Pi is getting its first price hike ever, going up by $10 due to supply chain issues. However, CEO Eben Upton confirmed that the company is reintroducing the 1GB Pi 4 for $35 for those on a budget, which was discontinued last year.
To be more specific, the popular Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB of RAM is getting bumped up from $35 to $45 due to pandemic-driven supply chain problems, especially in regards to semiconductors. Thankfully, there is a silver lining, as it looks like the price increase is only temporary.
“These changes in pricing are not here to stay,” Upton wrote. “As global supply chain issues moderate, we’ll keep revisiting this issue, and we want to get pricing back to where it was as fast as we can.”
While $10 more doesn’t sound like a lot, that’s a huge jump for a device tailored for affordability, especially when it comes to industrial company’s that use Raspberry Pis in products. It’s also worth mentioning that the 1GB model costing $35 and the 2GB model now running $45 makes them the most expensive we’ve seen since back in early 2020.
In closing, the company mentioned that it’s deprioritizing and slowing production of the Raspberry Pi 3B Plus, as it puts more effort into the 4. But, again, remember that this price increase should only be temporary, and hopefully, things get back to normal sooner rather than later.
