Anysia Kym’s inner monologue trickles out in fits and spurts on “like a dove” over a Loraine James instrumental that hums and whirrs beneath the pulse of an insistent kick drum. As stubborn as I am, I’m honest with my pen, the NYC producer intones on the final track of their new collaborative EP Clandestine, perfectly matter-of-fact discussing an ambiguously dependable lover: “Don’t let your feet off the ground / Don’t take it lightly,” she warns. But whatever clouds may be on the horizon, Kym sounds totally lovestruck cooing, “you like a dove / so number one.”
On their past records (Kym’s 2024 album Truest or Loraine’s 2023 album Gentle Confrontation), you’d expect the throbbing 808 to push the song into a frenzy, but Clandestine is more patient. And so the beat regularly glitches, downshifts, carving out space for Anysia’s delicately murmured bars. Even when the pace picks back up on the track’s second half, centering the drums in the same way as a guest verse, the kick never moves any faster than a light jog, like an athlete unconcerned with how quickly they can get from point A to point B. Have you ever seen a sky like this? Can you feel the ground beneath your feet?
