“Purdue student Ji Min Sha charged with murder of Varun Chheda”

The Purdue University student accused of fatally stabbing his roommate with a folding knife inside their dorm room was charged with murder by prosecutors Thursday.

Ji Min Sha, 22, ruthlessly attacked Varun Manish Chheda earlier this month by stabbing him multiple times in the head and neck before he called authorities to report his 20-year-old roommate was dead, prosecutors argued, according to the Journal & Courier.

When officers arrived at the scene on the West Lafayette campus in Indiana shortly after the 12:45 a.m. call on Oct. 5, they found the victim dead in a chair with the knife on the floor near him, authorities said.

Cops found Sha, of South Korea, wearing clothes with blood on them before he was arrested, prosecutors said, according to the newspaper.

Chheda, of Indianapolis, died as a result of “multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries, according to the local coroner’s office.

If convicted of the one count of murder, Sha could face 45-60 years behind bars. The cybersecurity major is being held without bail.

Days before his hearing Thursday, Sha claimed “I was blackmailed” when asked why he killed Chheda, but did not further elaborate, according to local reports.

He also said he was “very sorry” when asked if he had anything to tell the victim’s family.

As he was brought to jail last week, he also appeared to mutter “I love my family” to reporters, according to footage captured by outlets.

University police said last week Chheda was online gaming with friends the night he was killed, according to WTHR. One friend told the outlet he heard screaming through the gaming system.

University Police Chief Lesley Wiete called the attack “unprovoked and senseless” during a news conference detailing the incident.
