#PS5: Digital Foundry Debunks “Hotter” PS5 Model

#PS5: Digital Foundry Debunks “Hotter” PS5 Model
Days ago, Press Start, an Australian gaming outlet reported that newer PS5 consoles were shipped to the country last week. These consoles were a bit different from the original models as they were lighter in weight and were easier to assemble. The base stand in these new models had a screw system that could be assembled by hands, removing the need for a screwdriver.

The Changes

These new models of PS5 feature a new base screw system and are 300 grams lighter. Days ago, we covered exactly what makes the new PS5 models lighter. Here’s a recap of what these changes are.

  • These latest models feature a dialed-down heating system, thanks to the new heatsink and cooling fan.
  • The new models have a significantly smaller heatsink as compared to the older model and feature fewer copper and aluminum heat fins.
  • The PS5 updated models have a new cooling fan manufactured by Delta Electronics that has 17 wing blades instead of 23 wing blades in the original Delta fans. Also, the wing blades on the new Delta fan protrude longer into the center than the original.
  • Apart from this, a new Wi-Fi receiver component is also visible in the newer models.

The smaller heatsink seemed like a big issue as it made the PS5 run hotter. Now, it looks like it might not be an issue but might prove to be good for the consoles. Here’s why.

Richard Leadbetter’ Statements

Richard Leadbetter has now debunked any notion that this new PS5 is worse than the original consoles. He claimed that these new units are quieter and more powerful, thanks to the new fan. Also, the smaller heat sink succeeds in making it lighter and doesn’t affect the performance. This is contrary to what the Youtube video of tech journalist Austin Evans said.

“Whether the machine is hotter or not is still to be tested, but logic suggests that if the new cooling assembly was not up to the task, the fan would be increasing in speed and volume to expel the build-up of heat. This does not seem to be happening – and hours on, the power draw is still consistent too”, wrote Leadbetter.

So, it seems like Sony is confident enough to back its new design and assures the fans of it being better. While contradicting the claim of fans, Leadbetter suggested that the new fan will be doing a better job of expelling hot air. So, it won’t run hotter, in fact, it would be lighter and quieter.
