The tally comes just days after a chaotic scene in downtown Manhattan where anti-cop protesters, rallying in solidarity with those in Portland and Seattle, torched a half-dozen police vans.
Of the 310 vehicles, 282 had been fixed up and put back into the rotation while 14 had to be scrapped altogether, according to police officials. The remaining 14 NYPD vehicles were still in the shop.
“We saved the city thousands of dollars by using the glass from the cars that were already off the road and we would have had to wait about 6 weeks for new glass,” Deputy Commissioner of Support Services Robert Martinez told The Post.
The price tag for repairs came to $996,702 with around 180 mechanics and assistants who “worked around the clock to get the vehicles back on the road.”
“We were able to get 180 cars back on the street within days,” Martinez added.
Most of the damage occurred during the first week of protests in late May.
Since May 28, 13 of the vehicles were set on fire, 144 had damage to windshield or windows, 32 were vandalized with graffiti and one had its brake line cut, according to Martinez.
The others had either damage to the body, mirrors or tires.
“It is very sad to see taxpayers’ money being wasted, especially during these times of budget cuts,” Martinez said.
