Just when you thought Mario lore couldn't get any more convoluted – if the video game series had lore at all! – an unearthed Japanese children's gamebook book, licensed by Nintendo, throws a wrench into one of the most famous fictional couples in history!
It's long been known that Princess Peach and Mario have a "will they or won't they?" thing going on, with the latest appearance in Super Mario Odyssey having Peach turn town the plumber's proposal after taking out Bowser for the umpteenth time. At the time gamers though it was because Peach was frustrated with games they were playing. But what if the reason she has turned down Mario's advances all this time is that she's already married?
Sensationalist Japanese website Buzz Plus News, which was then independently verified, uncovered a 34-year-old gamebook book that was only released in Japan. The book 'Super Mario Bros. Side-Story' was released in 1986 and tells the tale of Mario going to Peach's wedding, which isn't to him, but the prince of the Potato Kingdom, Prince Andre. As usual, Peach is kidnapped and Mario and Andre team up to save her. They save her by having the Prince kiss Peach to wake her up. The second book in the series 'Super Mario Bros. Side-Story 2' sees the Prince and Princess married.
While Mario canon is dubious at the best of time, these books were officially licensed by Nintendo and appeared alongside other books in the 'Adventure Hero Books' gamebook series from famous franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Gundam, Kinght Rider, and Kamen Rider – all officially licensed. Gamebooks are much like choose-your-own-adventure books, but use game systems to guide the player.

It might that since then, in the "canon" Mario timeline, that Peach has divorced Andre, or that Peach only married the Prince to further the goals of the Mushroom Kingdom, much like Bowser continually tries to do for his Koopa Kingdom. Or maybe Peach loved Andre at one point, but cheats on him with Mario, her childhood friend? Maybe it's the other way and Mario loves Peach, his childhood friend, but she doesn't love him back.
