German prison inmate Christian Brückner, 43, has repeatedly been identified as the prime suspect in the 2007 case, with prosecutors having said there is “concrete evidence” she is dead.
But his lawyer, Friedrich Fulscher, insisted to The Sun that there is no evidence tying the convicted rapist to then-3-year-old McCann’s abduction from a Portuguese vacation resort.
“Where is the evidence? Why has the prosecution not revealed it?” Fulscher asked.
“There won’t be a trial for my client for Madeleine McCann. I am certain,” he declared.
If he is proven wrong and the case does get to court, Brückner would face the trial “serenely and calmly,” he said.
“He has nothing to hide,” Fulscher insisted.
Brückner — whose previous convictions include child sex offenses — is currently in prison on drug charges, and has yet to serve his time from his conviction for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal.
He has always denied any involvement in the McCann’s disappearance.
