At gamescom 2024 «Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake» I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the upcoming remake of the very popular classic.

In a few months, the long-awaited remake of «Dragon Quest III» under the name «Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake». I was able to get the game at gamescom 2024 from publisher Square Enix take a closer look and tell you what my first impression is.

The game is a remake of the third «Dragon Quest»-part. The third part represents the beginning of the Erdrick-Trilogie which is why it makes a lot of sense to remake this part first. In the remake, the new content has been kept to a minimum in order to remain true to the original. Nevertheless, some Quality of Life-Features and new content has been added. For example, you can change the game speed at the touch of a button. There is an auto-save function, auto-battle features, a optional tutorial for newbiesa modernized user interface, English and Japanese voice output(!) and much more. As for the content extensions, there is one with the Monster Wrangler a new class or vocation in the game. This class can recruit defeated monsters and learn their skills. The captured monsters can then also be let fight in the monster arena. In the gamescom demo we were already able to Monster Arena with our monsters. Instead of betting on the monster fights like in the original, in the remake you command the monsters yourself. There are also new armor and weapons, but how much new content there will be in total remains to be seen.

In the demo I was able to visit the Monster Arena and the Skyfell Tower and its residents. Below are my impressions.

After watching the first trailer for «Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake» I was initially skeptical whether this look could do justice to the original. But when I first tried it out, I realized that it was exactly the perfect look! The mixture from 2D pixel characters with 3D objects terrific. Whether cities, mountains or dungeons – all places look beautiful. The new lighting effects are particularly effective at night or in dark places (the Skyfell Tower) and really add to the atmosphere. The new character sprites are also noticeable in combat and are also very nicely animated. In terms of the look, the game reminded me a lot of «Octopath Traveler»!

Gameplay

As far as playfulness is concerned, you are very classic Only the Quality of Life elements mentioned above bring a breath of fresh air into the game and at the same time make it easier to access. The fights are classic turn-based, However, if you wish, you can automated combat where you only have to tell your teammates how to fight. Individual commands no longer have to be carried out in this mode. Your teammates only need to know whether they should act aggressively, defensively, healingly or cautiously.

Conclusion: First impression

I am convinced that the «Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake» is in no way inferior to the original and can even inspire many newcomers due to the modernized gameplay and the great graphic innovations. Graphics, gameplay and sound (original sounds!) are terrific. You can tell that there is a lot of heart in the remake. «Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake» radiates a warmth that makes you want more!

By the way, «Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake» on the PlayStation 5 was great. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case on the Switch version, which I tested briefly. The frame rate was unfortunately not good in the Switch version and the game didn’t run quite as smoothly as a result. You could notice clear differences to the PS5 version.

«Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake» appears on 14. November 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store for Windows).
