#Preview: «Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact» at gamescom 2024

I have a I got an appointment with the developer/publisher “Arc System Works” for the upcoming fighting game «Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact» and I’ll tell you here what I like about the game and what I don’t.

I was pleasantly surprised when a fighting game based on the hit anime «Hunter x Hunter» was announced. I was waiting with great anticipation to finally get my hands on it myself. The game is being developed by Arc System Works published outside Japan and is published by “Eighting” was developed. The developer studio has shown itself in the past for games such as «Bloody Roar» and licensed games like «Naruto: Clash of Ninja» series. The developers’ biggest game, however, is far from anime: It is «Marvel vs. Capcom 3» and something similar happens in the latest «Hunter x Hunter»-Game too.

Gameplay

In the game you enter 3 vs. 3 tag team matchesn. In the gamescom demo I could not select all characters. In the final game, however, there should be 16 fighters After the fighters and the stage have been selected, after a short loading time, you go straight into the battle arena. After the fight has started, I immediately noticed the similarities to «Marvel vs. Capcom 3» You can recognize some basic attacks – but most of them are from «Hunter x Hunter» inspired – especially the specials.

You fight against each other in 3 vs 3 battles.

In my trial session I was able to play two rounds. The game has no complex inputsso I could pull off cool-looking combos relatively easily – so I think the game is also suitable for newcomers to this genre. I was assured that the game “easy to learn, hard to master” This means that the game is easy to get into, but in order to get the most out of the combat system and to effectively link combos together, you have to spend time with the game and learn more than just the basics.

The rounds with the game were quite short, but I had a lot of fun battling with Gon, Hisoka and Co. The special moves look great and can quickly turn the tide when things get tight. One negative thing I noticed was that in theory you can Attacks again and again spamming can to keep the opponent at bay – but maybe it’s a skill problem, I didn’t cope so well when I was spammed. ;D

I also noticed that the Framerate started to break towards the end of a fight, which is probably due to the fact that it is still a relatively early version of the game.

By the way: In addition to multiplayer modes, the game will also have a story mode that retells important points from the anime series. Story sections that are currently only in the manga will not be touched.

Chart

The stages in the game are very similar to the style of the anime and I like how detailed the backgrounds in the game. Every now and then you can see small Easter eggs from the series again (certain characters that run funny through the picture etc.). In my opinion, the characters could still a little more love The designs do not appear as detailed as they would be in a «Dragon Ball FighterZ» is the case. So I hope they get a little more polish before the final game.

Conclusion: First impression

After the first play I would say that «Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact» is a game that is made for people who especially like the «Marvel vs. Capcom» series and Anime fans The combat system is easy to learn and will certainly provide some fun for a few rounds. However, I can’t say much about the depth of the game. I couldn’t see much in my short play session. But I was assured that the game is also suitable for experts in this genre. So it remains to be seen how much long-term fun the game will offer. It certainly provided me with a few rounds of fun.

«Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact» is scheduled to be released in 2024 for PC, Nintendo Switch and Playstation 5.
