Laurie Melchionda, 59, was found by police near the front door of her Braintree homeat about 11:45 a.m. after suffering several gunshot wounds, WCVB-TV reported, citing a prosecutor.
She was declared dead at a local hospital.
The suspected shooter, Robert Bonang, 61, was caught by cops at Melchionda’s home, officials said.
Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said at a press conference that Bonang — who used to live in the neighborhood — and Melchionda knew each other.
“It is believed that this is a targeted event, it’s not a random act and this is not something that the neighbors should have to worry about,” Morrissey said, according to the report.
Melchionda, who had been a nurse for over 30 years, most recently held the position of Director of Health Services for Weston Public Schools, according to WCVB-TV.
“She’s extremely well thought of in town,” Morrissey said.
Weston Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Midge Connolly said in a statement the district is “suffering a tremendous loss. Laurie brought professionalism, expertise, warmth, and caring to our school community every day.”
Bonang is expected to arraigned Thursday on murder and weapons possesion charges.
