“«Pompo: The Cinéphile»: A fast-paced declaration of love for filmmaking

The anime film “Pompo: The Cinéphile” will soon find its way to Germany thanks to KSM Anime. We already had the opportunity to watch the “Nyallywood” flick beforehand. Did the film about filmmaking captivate us until the credits or would we rather have left the imaginary cinema hall in the middle? You can find out all about it in our review!

Trailer:

This is what «Pompo: The Cinéphile» is about:

Joelle Davidovich Pomponette, known as Pompo, has an eye for successful films. As an aspiring producer in the Nyallywood dream factory and granddaughter of a legendary film magnate, she delivers one reliable bestseller after the other – but that has little to do with a real love of cinema. They’re all trashy B movies, with lots of nudity, action and explosions. Pompo’s personal assistant, the nervous-neurotic Gene, takes a completely different approach: cinema is art and must enchant! Pompo is skeptical but gets carried away by Gene’s fascination and hires him to direct her next screenplay. And so Gene embarks on an adventure to combine art and commerce, not to overstretch his tight budget and finally: to finish on time! Will Gene’s film debut succeed and maybe even become a success?

Our opinion on the film:

«Pompo: The Cinéphile» surprised me in two ways with its unconventional nature: Firstly, the main character of the film is not the eponymous Pompo, but her seemingly inconspicuous assistant Gene. On the other hand, the movie stands out from the other anime strips that I have seen so far due to its striking editing style. Exactly this cutting style requires some getting used to, especially at the beginning. Due to the rapid juxtaposition of the scenes, sometimes in non-chronological order, it is difficult for the viewer to follow what is happening at first. However, this confusion is then gradually resolved so that the actual main part of the film can begin.

A “movie within a movie”

In this one we accompany the rather anxious Gene on his film production adventure. This gives the viewer an insight into the process of creating the “film within a film”. The interesting thing here is that some of the aspects mentioned about filmmaking can also be found in the anime itself – in a way a wink in the mirror. Apparently, this also meant that one or the other clichéd twist was built into the plot. As a result, the film unfortunately becomes a bit kitschy at times for my taste, but you can overlook that to a certain extent in the overall picture. Due to these built-in film clichés and its fast-paced presentation, the film itself is not really realistic. In direct comparison, I prefer the somewhat more realistic approach of «Shirobako» – itself an anime about anime production. Due to its wacky and outstanding nature and the setting, one can forgive the exaggerated elements of “Pompo: The Cinéphile” – after all, Hollywood strips are not exactly known for their closeness to reality.

Another interesting aspect is the special attention that was paid to the art of film editing. At the end of the day, Gene has to face the difficult task of shortening his film to the magical running time of 90 minutes – even though every scene is close to his heart. Here you could look over his shoulder as a spectator while he was editing, which I really liked. This is also how Gene explains the intention behind his changes, such as changing the camera angle to make the scene more impressive. This reminded me in places of the making-of material for real movies, which often contain deleted scenes that didn’t make it into the finished product.

Animations and synchro: Great!

As for the animations, the studio’s work can change CLAP really show. Overall, the movie has a very colorful and eye-catching style, a striking feature here are the partially colored outlines of the figures. The contrast that was created between the “normal” and the film scenes is also remarkable. So the latter got a very Hollywood-like character, which is also reflected in the camera settings and the lighting. In addition, the animations were kept extremely fluid, which makes the scenes even more reminiscent of a real film, despite the anime art style. The quick cuts and time jumps already mentioned were also implemented creatively and therefore don’t look too similar. I can also commend the German dubbing at this point. In my opinion, the characters, above all Gene and Pompo, were cast very aptly and the acting is convincing over the entire length of the film.

Conclusion

All in all, «Pompo: The Cinéphile» is a fast-paced and thrilling film that is also entertaining because of its length. As a viewer, however, you shouldn’t expect a realistic slice-of-life title here, but rather a somewhat exaggerated but loving homage to filmmaking. For this reason I can only recommend a look at the strip.

Thanks to KSM Anime for providing the preview screener!
