#”Pokémon: Shining Diamond”: More a little sparkle than a brilliant shine

“Pokémon Diamond” has been given a new coat of paint. We took a closer look at the game: Has it been a worthy remake? …

Gameplay

Pokémon: Shining Shine is definitely a good game. But that is more due to the well-known mechanics from the original editions. 95% of the remake relies on a faithful reproduction of the classics, but without compensating for known weaknesses.

Problems that have been taken over here 1: 1 are …

  • too small a Pokédex
  • uninteresting fights with often repetitive Pokémon
  • a bad and illogical level curve that completely removes the difficulty just in the middle of the game
  • an arena in Herzhofen that is skipped
  • many development items only after the end of the story

Since, unfortunately, the focus is entirely on the faithful reproduction of diamonds and pearls, all the problems have also been taken up, most of which have already been resolved by the Plation special edition.

The innovations here are more in the area of comfort, but do not change the feel of the game significantly and sometimes cause additional points of criticism.

  • Pokémon can now run after the trainer, but the map is not adapted for this, so they are more of a handicap
  • TMs can only be used once
  • Automatic EP divider exacerbates the level problem
  • Pokétch now even more superfluous than in the orogials, due to the lack of a second screen

On the positive side, it can be said that there are no VMs. However, this is no longer a real innovation, because it has been used this way for some time.

Only the underground, which has always been the specialty of the games, could really be positively worked out and improved. There are now caves in which you can catch free roaming Pokémon and also some that are not traded on the normal unearthly map. But why do the Pokémon only run around freely underground while the outdated random spawn system is used above ground?

Frequent invisible edges that you run against also spoil the feel of the game a little. A little more development time to fix such diseases would have been really good for the game. Unfortunately, you don’t see innovation anywhere in the game.

graphic

In the graphics, however, a lot has happened. The edges are sharper, the colors better and overall it looks more appealing than the older main editions. Opinions are divided about the chibi look and I would also have liked a more realistic graphic style, but it still looks modern overall.

But here, too, overall more is possible and in my opinion it is not the graphically best Pokémon game. Lets Go Pikachu / Eevee have set the bar a little higher and even that does not correspond to what is possible today and also on the Nintendo Switch.

Pokémon is and will remain a game that is always a bit behind in terms of graphics and that hasn’t changed here either. Still, it’s a solid upgrade from the original games.

That would have been more inside, but you can also see here in the underground, because the areas with free roaming Pokémon are again significantly stronger than the overworld.

Conclusion

“Pokémon: Radiant Diamond” is a good game in itself, but a rather weak remake. The strengths of the Sinnoh region are of course also fully available here, but as a remake you do not fully exploit the full potential for a long time.

In development, they stubbornly stuck to the originals in tunnel vision and did not even try to correct the weaknesses and instead took over everything 1: 1. For me, a remake should always be the ultimate version of the game, but it didn’t turn out to be.

Pokémon Platinum did a lot more right than the two new remake editions. The gameplay was not touched here and the graphics unfortunately also fall short of expectations.

Overall, the fun of the game falls by the wayside and as a full-price title I can only recommend “Pokémon: Radiant Shine” if you no longer have the original editions. Unfortunately, it’s just a slightly pimped-up version, but it’s not what it should be for a long time.
