With Polyband as publisher, the “Pokémon” TV series will continue to be released on DVD. How convincing is the third season, which leads to Johto?

In 2016, the publisher Studio Hamburg released the first two seasons of the “Pokémon” TV series. Seasons 17 to 19 were later also released on DVD and Blu-ray. At that time, promises were made to publish all other seasons of the long-lived anime series. But then there was radio silence and then Polyband came around the corner and now takes care of the publication of the «Pokémon» franchise. The third season of “The Johto Journeys” (in German: “Die Johto Reisen”) was released on disc on May 28th. We’ll clarify whether the release is convincing in our review.

This is what it’s about:

Ash, Pikachu, Misty and Brock leave Alabastia and set off for their next challenge: the Johto region! Although he still has a job to do for Prof. Eich, Ash throws himself headlong into the Johto League, competes against a number of arena leaders and adds Pokémon like Karnimani and Endive to his team. On the next stage of their journey, our heroes will meet many Pokémon they have never seen … and of course there is no shortage of exciting battles, fabulous adventures and Team Rocket’s rip-offs!

Trailer / Opening:

Through the new region:

You can’t really say much about “Pokémon”. It’s just “Pokémon”. Ash explores a region and fights his way through the arena ladder. With the third season, which celebrated its premiere in Japan in 1999, one goes over to the “gold and silver” region, that is, the region that the players in the then newest video games of the “Pokémon” series could explore. Nevertheless, season 3 offers a lot of classic nostalgia.

The German RTL 2 synchro is used. Alternatively, an English dubbing is also offered, but without subtitles. The picture quality shows that the season is already old. There is no remastered version. The lyrics on “Karaokemon” are in German.

The third season of “Pokémon” comes in a softbox with an O-Card, a cardboard slipcase. For the more than fair price of 30 euros, you shouldn’t expect too much in terms of packaging and extras, so the content is perfectly fine. The cover and the five discs are very simple but uniformly designed.

In terms of content, “Pokémon – Season 3: The Johto Journeys” is classic Pokémon. For me, Pokémon was and is always special because it makes no secret of the fact that it almost always tells the same story. That makes the characters, the environment, the stories and the new Pokémon all the more exciting. And with them, the third season can definitely score. It’s not an anime for binge-wading. You can let it run on the side and let yourself be sprinkled. Quasi a Feel Good series for children and adults. But you have to like it. Nevertheless, “Pokémon” also likes to tell more emotional stories or plays with potential depth, which is quickly made up for by the episodic narrative. Sounds like criticism, but in the end it is in the eye of the beholder.

Conclusion: The first seasons of the «Pokémon» TV series score with nostalgia. A factor that affects everyone differently. “Pokémon – Season 3: The Johto Journeys” is just what you would expect from “Pokémon”. And that’s good. For me, the Johto Journeys are one of the better seasons or generations because it is the first time that it breaks out of the classic Pokémon garb of seasons one and two and offers a lot of new things. With Rocko and Misty, however, the characters of the predecessors have been retained in order not to force a complete change. “Pokémon” can be fun and will be fun for fans of the TV series too. For everyone else, there will have to be a pinch of nostalgia left.
