The Studio Key has already gained a lot of attention through numerous stories, including “Angel Beats”, “Clannad” or “Charlotte”. With “Planetarian” another visual novel is implemented as an anime and revolves around a world far away from today in a planetarium. But can this anime also convince and tell us more about the things that lie far up in the sky?

Content (8/10):

After a biological and nuclear war has ended, humanity finds itself on the brink. Cities are difficult to enter as machines are programmed to shoot at “invaders”. Despite this, people take the risk to find valuable items in these cities that have value in the post-apocalyptic world.
The protagonist of the film also belongs to these risk-taking people. He is a so-called junker looking for things like alcohol to sell on. One day he seeks shelter in a building that is apparently still powered by electricity. There he meets an android: a robot that looks like a human. This android is Yumemi Hoshino, who is in charge of the planetarium. She greets the guests and accompanies them through the building. So Yumemi would also like to offer an idea to the protagonist, who is initially very reluctant to do so. But after a while she can convince him. Unfortunately, the project is not that easy after all, because there are technical difficulties in the planetarium. The protagonist therefore tries to find a way to repair the machines and in return to get an idea of the universe.

assessment

The film particularly focuses its story on two characters, the squire and the android Yumemi Hoshino. At the beginning there is a time jump into the future to give the viewer a more pleasant introduction to the story. This is where the history of the planetarium is told. In my opinion, this is a good start. The characters are well thought out too. Since the story focuses mainly on the planetarium, this doesn’t necessarily provide much variety, but it does allow the story to be pieced together little by little to present a kind of finale at the end. Without too many spoilers, I can only say that it was very successful and was very consistent with the atmosphere of the story.

Animations (10/10):

The animations are very high quality and well done. The color contrast was also very good. There was also a bit of CGI to be seen, although I have to say that I don’t necessarily prefer this type when the rest was done without CGI. This makes it look like a small incision in the overall picture.

Music (10/10):

One of the plus points is definitely the music. This was recorded at the right moments and created a very coherent atmosphere.

German localization (8/10):

The dubbing was done in the studio G&G Tonstudios GmbH directed by Sebastian Hollman.

I liked the dubbing, which was tuned very appropriately overall. I didn’t feel like some characters got the short end of the stick because they were only voiced for a few sentences. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough for 10 points, because the votes didn’t trigger a “wow effect” for me.

Conclusion

I think «Planetarian» is a well done anime. In a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is on the brink, there are still many beautiful things that matter to humanity. An android can also achieve a lot through an idea of the universe and have a great influence on others. For me, the story is laid out very relaxed and well told. For this reason, I can definitely recommend the anime. Especially to the people who already have other works of the studio Key have liked.
