#Pit bull finds home after 667 days in LA shelter

After 667 days in a Los Angeles shelter, Melvin the dog got the best birthday gift ever — a forever family.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) announced Wednesday the canine had been adopted after his nearly two-year wait.

“Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) waited almost two years to say these words: Melvin has left the building! At 3 years and 10 months, Melvin was set to celebrate another birthday at spcaLA, but instead, he’ll celebrate with his new family,” the statement read.

Melvin is one of 1,298 animals the shelter had adopted since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the shelter, Melvin’s new family has “years of large breed experience” and will be sharing the love with two other pit bull siblings.

SpcaLA tried various social media platforms to try and find Melvin his perfect home, but ultimately deduced the reason nothing was working was due to factors beyond their control.

“Melvin’s biggest challenges in finding a home may have been the two things he couldn’t change: the color of his coat and his breed,” the spcaLA wrote.

“SpcaLA tried social media, networking, and media partners to broadcast Melvin to the public, but ultimately, it was a spcaLA adoption counselor who matched Melvin with a family in search of the perfect Pit.”

The spcaLA president thanked all her staff and the new owners for showing Melvin the love he deserves.

“While I thank the family for adopting, and the staff for working so hard for Melvin, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our supporters, whose help makes everything we do possible,” spcaLA president Madeline Bernstein said.
