“#Brooklyn pizzeria adds $1 ‘comforting words’ to their menu”
A Brooklyn pizza shop is delivering boxes of hot and fresh consolation for just $1 with any order. Vinnie’s Pizzeria, at 148 Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg, is now offering “positive reinforcement” to their delivery menu for those who just can’t wait for their next therapy session.
For the added price of one buck, customers can order a side of “comforting words,” the new menu item states on Seamless. “For $1, our delivery driver will look you straight in the eyes and tell you ‘EVERYTHING’S GONNA BE OK AND YOU’RE DOING THE BEST YOU CAN.’ ”
Co-owner Sean Berthiaume hatched the idea on the eve of Tuesday’s presidential debates.
“I saw how stressed out and sad and kind of lost everyone has felt for a long time,” he told The Post. “Subconsciously it came from the morning of the debate when everyone seemed especially stressed out. I feel like everyone needed an adult. There doesn’t seem to be anyone saying, ‘Everything is going to be okay.’ ”
Before adding “comforting words” to the menu on Tuesday, Berthiaume ran it past his delivery drivers and they were game. But he didn’t really expect anyone to order the $1 slice of extra love, rather he figured customers would simply get a chuckle while scrolling through the saucy menu.
So far, there have been about 50 takers. Berthiaume says some contactless customers have requested notes while another asked the delivery driver for a video, and he obliged. Some are treating it like a bouquet of flowers and ordering it for friends who are going through a tough time and could use a pick-me-up.
One driver, Mikey Monteiro, 36, said his first positive-reinforcement request was from a woman named Meredith who ordered two extras for her roommates. “I was wearing my mask, and I asked if I could come in so I could deliver them to each person. It’s ultimately a jovial exchange, and we sort of say it to each other,” said Monteiro, who has done about 10 such deliveries.
Monteiro worked at Vinnie’s in the early aughts, moved onto bars and eventually became a carpenter. When work dried up because of the pandemic, he started delivering pies for his old boss, and this extra cheesy request has helped perk him up, too.
“This is making my day way better. We aren’t pandering. I think in the grand scheme of things we want to bring some light in this dark time.”
And, of course, his tips have been more generous.
However, social media users appear to be hungry for the validation. Asked one evidently distraught local resident on Twitter, “Is this an option for walk up service too? Pls?”
On Instagram, another potential customer wondered whether a purchase of a whole pie was required to receive encouragement.
Not necessarily, according to the restaurant’s response. “There’s a $15 minimum so you’d have to order 15 comforting sentences. But if you’d like only 1, you can order it as a pickup and we’ll tell you how great you’re doing from our pickup window,” they promised.
Berthiaume wants to spread the love any way possible.
“I didn’t do this to go viral,” said Berthiaume, who considers himself a “pretty emotional guy.” “We have a special connection with our customers. And I just thought it would be fun.”
