#Patriots ‘sold out’ and now we are doomed

Bill Belichick opened up about the Patriots struggles on Monday. Yes, really. 2020 is one bizarre year.

The usually reserved New England coach went on WEEI radio in Boston and broke down part of his team’s problems, which he said partly have to do with relying on youth and a lack of depth.

“Look, we paid [quarterback] Cam Newton $1 million. I mean it’s obvious we didn’t have any money. It’s nobody’s fault,” he said. “That’s what we did the last five years. We sold out and won three Super Bowls, played in a fourth and played in a AFC Championship game. This year we had less to work with. It’s not an excuse, it’s just a fact.”

The 68-year-old Belichick hinted that it was inevitable the Patriots, who rank 30th in total salary cap according to Spotrac, would eventually take a step back.

“The structure of the league is the structure of the league. That isn’t going to change,” he said.

Belichick declined to comment on whether recent poor drafts also contributed to the Patriots’ problems. New England is 2-5, having lost four straight games for the first time since 2000 and is a long shot to reach the playoffs. The last time they didn’t reach the postseason was 2008.
