#Parents sue after 4th grader suspended for BB gun during virtual class

Louisiana school officials are facing a lawsuit for accusing a fourth grader of flashing a “full-sized rifle” during his virtual class and suspending him — when the weapon was really a BB gun.

The parents of Ka’Mauri Harrison filed suit against the Jefferson Parish School Board on Friday after the boy was booted from Woodmere Elementary School for six days last month, CNN reported.

The 9-year-old was taking a test on Sept. 11 with his computer on mute when his brother walked into the room and tripped over the BB gun that was lying on the floor, according to a school behavioral report.

Ka’Mauri then left his seat, out of view of the teacher, and came back with “what appeared to be a full-sized rifle in his possession,” the report said.

The teacher tried to talk to Ka’Mauri, but his computer was muted and he was kicked out of the virtual class.

His parents told school officials that it was a BB gun, not a rifle.

But a school board hearing Sept. 22 found him “guilty of displaying a facsimile weapon while receiving virtual instruction,” the suit says.

“They are treating it as if he brought a weapon to school,” said the boy’s dad Nyron Harrison.

The family is seeking at least $50,000 in damages for “mental pain, suffering, anguish and embarrassment, humiliation and loss of self-esteem, future counseling and tutoring and lost income,” according to the suit.

The school district declined to comment, citing a policy of not speaking about individual student records, CNN reported.

“Regarding discipline, it is our policy that teachers and administrators may employ reasonable disciplinary and corrective measures to maintain order,” the district said.
