“#Pakistan lifts TikTok ban after pledge to clean up ‘immoral’ content”
The popular social media app was given a second chance after it pledged to enforce the rules set forth by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
“TikTok has agreed to moderate accounts in accordance with local laws,” a spokesman for the regulatory body said, noting that the app had some 20 million monthly active users in the country.
TikTok was the third most-downloaded app in Pakistan over the past 12 months, behind WhatsApp and Facebook, according to analytics firm SensorTower.
The PTA had previously said that its TikTok ban would be in effect until the company introduced a mechanism that would moderate unlawful content, adding that it has received “complaints from different segments of the society against immoral and indecent content on the video-sharing application.”
TikTok is currently working to avoid a ban in the United States, with the Trump administration accusing the app of siphoning up user data for China’s authoritarian regime.
TikTok has said it has never provided user data to China and that it would not do so if asked, saying in a statement that it has “no higher priority than promoting a safe app experience that protects our users’ privacy.”
