No idea, no product, no service, and no platform is free of controversies and backlashes. Game developers face many issues in regard to pleasing the gamers and the market. One such gaming giant which is facing one too many problems this year is Activision Blizzard. You can recognize it as the publisher of Call of Duty franchise and Overwatch. Today, we are going to talk about a controversy regarding an Overwatch character.

The Controversy

Most of you must have been following the recent happenings with Blizzard. So you may know that there is an ongoing sexual harassment case against their employees. Well, it doesn’t stop there! Now they have to change the name of a cowboy character in the game, McCree.

Apparently, he was named after Jesse McCree, who has been linked to Blizzard employees engaging in inappropriate behaviour and conduct. As a result, there was a huge fan outcry everywhere to change the name of the character. The same was announced on the official twitter handle of Overwatch.

“As we continue to discuss how we best live up to our values and to demonstrate our commitment to creating a game world that reflects them, we believe it’s necessary to change the name of the heroe currently known as McCree to something that better represents what Overwatch stands for”, said Overwatch Team.

Blizzard expressed how they built themselves around the idea of equality and how they want to reflect the same through their games. Gamers know that McCree was a central character of the game, and such a change would require a lot more time than minor character changes.

New Story Arc Delayed

Since McCree would take some time to be allotted a new name throughout the game, other future plans will also face delays. Biggest victim of this would be the highly anticipated new story arc. This new narrative arc was supposed to launch in September but now it will be delayed. Till then fans can call McCree, Gunslinger With No Name inspired by Clint Eastwood’s The Man With No Name Trilogy.

This is majorly because McCree was a major part of this arc and now, he needs rework, and so does this new arc. Overwatch team expressed that naming a character after a real-life employee was a mistake and that they won’t ever repeat that. Well, there is nothing wrong with it, but it is better to avoid it than to fall into such a problem.

Also, fans, don’t be disappointed as Blizzard has stated that it will release the new FFA map next month. So, you do have something to be excited about. Afterall Overwatch is one of the best games ever made and any new development about it is exciting.
