More than a dozen Ohio teens tested positive for the coronavirus after returning from a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, according to a report.

Fourteen students from Belmont County schools tested positive after coming home June 14 from the beach spot, The Sun News reported.

“It’s a rite of passage, but this year the kids came home with more than sand in their shorts – they got COVID-19,” said Bellaire Schools Superintendent Darren Jenkins told news station WTRF.

There are still tests pending from the group of 90 students who traveled from both Belmont County and neighboring West Virginia, according to reports.

Robert Sproul, the deputy health commissioner of Belmont County, said officials are also working with students’ families to make sure their relatives haven’t contracted the virus, The Sun News reported.

“Our COVID 19 numbers were slowing down, and now this,” Sproul said of the outbreak. “This is not what we wanted.”
