“#Olivia Rodrigo’s Driving Home 2 U Film Drifting Into March 25th Disney+ Release”
On Twitter, Rodrigo posted, “driving home 2 u (a SOUR film) is out march 25th on @disneyplus!!!! 🌄”
For the first time, Rodrigo will take audiences on a road trip from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Los Angeles, California. Salt Lake City is where the young artist filmed High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and began writing her triple-platinum Geffen Records debut album Sour. As Rodrigo takes fans to LA, she “recounts the memories of writing and creating her record-breaking debut album and shares her feelings as a young woman navigating a specific time in her life,” according to the official press release.
In addition, the concert film will feature new live arrangements of “eleven songs from Sour performed with brand new arrangements in unique locations, including Mojave Airplane Boneyard, Roy’s Motel & Café, Arcosanti, and the Red Rock Canyon State Park. It also includes special guest performances and appearances by Grammy-nominated artists Jacob Collier, Blu DeTiger, and Towa Bird. The film explores how Sour came to be through Olivia’s personal stories and behind-the-scenes footage featuring intimate moments showcasing Olivia’s artistry in and out of the studio.”
Olivia Rodrigo on Tiny Desk
Rodrigo recently appeared on NPR’s “The Tiny Desk,” which premiered on December 7th, 2022. She appeared on the seminal music series to play a stripped-down version of several of her songs from Sour in a DMV, a fitting location for a teen, who sees getting her driver’s license as something of a milestone. The young pop star even wrote a viral single about the experience, “drivers license,” hence the DMV locale and its “interesting vibes” for the NPR special.
Although her rise to stardom may seem sudden, Rodrigo describes her songwriting career as beginning in the backseat of a car, and the NPR special shows off her talent in a similar set up as an acoustic musician. Watch “The Tiny Desk,” featuring Rodrigo on vocals, guitar, keys; Heather Baker on guitars; Hayley Brownell on drums and guitars; Arianna Powell on guitars; and Moa Munoz on bass, guitar, below (trust, it will get any Rodrigo fan even more excited for the new movie):
The new concert film will provide another look at the young star’s rise to fame, and how that experience was shaped by being in the backseat of a car as she roadtrips from Salt Lake City to LA. “This is a unique film experience where for the first-time fans will understand how her album came to be and why it was such a personal journey for Olivia,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television. “This is not a concert film per say, but really, an opportunity to experience first-hand how Olivia Rodrigo became one of the biggest music stars of the day – and a chance to see her perform the songs from Sour like never before.”
“‘driving home 2 u’ is such a unique and fresh approach to a music film, and that’s just what we’ve come to expect from Olivia,” said John Janick, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M and Interscope Films. “It’s an authentic look into her creative process, her incredible drive and who she is as an artist and person. We’re so proud to have co-produced this film with Supper Club and are thrilled that it has found a home on Disney +.”
