#Our opinion on «Seven Days War»

The KAZÉ Anime Nights 2021 are now in full swing – now the film “Seven Days War” also celebrated its German cinema premiere. Of course we watched the movie on the big screen. You can read here whether he was able to convince us!

This is what the film is about:

When the shy Mamoru learns that his sandpit friend and secret love Aya has to move away against her will, he takes all his courage and asks her if she wants to run away with him. However, the innocent lamb misunderstood this and invites other classmates to take part in the exciting runaway maneuver until her birthday. The six teenagers are hiding in a disused coal plant – but they are not the only ones! An illegal immigrant of elementary school age is also hanging around there, and only a little later the immigration authorities turn up in the factory about him. With the hiding place blown and one more person to protect, Mamoru and Co have no choice but to resist until the end. What began as a childlike protest against the adults now has a serious aftertaste …

The shuffling Kogoro

The first time I read the synopsis of “Seven Days War” after KAZÉ had announced the license, my interest was aroused. As a big slice of life fan, the idea and the setting of the film immediately appealed to me. Now that I’ve finally gotten a look at it, I have to say that most of my expectations have been met – if not entirely.

But let’s start at the beginning: “Seven Days War” starts at a very brisk pace. Right at the beginning, the strip makes use of the anime cliché box several times. The main protagonist is obsessed with history, shy and barely noticed by his classmates. Then Aya, his secret love, has to move away suddenly – and of course in a week and far away to Tokyo. The film can hardly take the time to establish this starting point, with a good 90 minutes it turns out to be quite short.

Once at the old coal works, the story picks up speed. Day after day, the youngsters thwart the adults’ attempt to storm the building. How they do this, while not exactly realistic, is entertaining. Nevertheless, the feeling arises that so many opportunities have been missed to make the plot even more exciting. For example, an early typhoon is alluded to, which is used more for plot-related purposes than to build up tension.

Finally it comes to the big round of confessions, in which a good dose of pathos was thrown. The film also has a surprising twist in store. Only in the case of the main character Mamoru does the feeling emerge in the end that he has somehow been “passed over” – a shame in my eyes.

Overall, it can be said that “Seven Days War” is not a film that sets new anime standards. Despite its weaknesses, the flick entertained me well – and that’s what counts in the end.

Rating: 7/10

«Seven Days War» is a typical anime movie that also entertained me well throughout. Even if it falls back on many typical clichés and is largely predictable, it can still convince in terms of content and technology.

It’s quite entertaining how a group of adolescents protect themselves from the adults and use pretty much every trick of the old coal-fired power station. The very clear focus here is on the protagonist, whereas the story is quite banal and has little depth. Overall, however, the strip could be perceived as a little childish.

The interesting characters and the socially important statements that the film makes can still fill the length of the film well. A good middle ground has also been found in the narrative speed, which neither seems rushed nor lengthy.

“Seven Days War” does not bring any major innovations, but is otherwise a well-done anime film in every aspect.

Rating: 7/10

We would like to thank the entire KAZÉ team for being on the guest list for the cinema screening.
