#Our opinion on «Josie, the tiger and the fish»

The KAZÉ Anime Nights 2021 are slowly drawing to a close. Now “Josie, the Tiger and the Fish” has also celebrated its German cinema premiere. But does the saying “The best comes at the end” come true here? We share our thoughts on the film with you in this article!

This is what the film is about:

The 24-year-old Kumiko loves the sea and has created her own fantasy world with books and painting, because she herself has never swam in the deep blue. Only in her dreams does she dive like a mermaid through a colorful underwater world full of buildings and fish. Growing up with her over-anxious grandmother, she has seen very little of the world at all. Because Josie, as she wants to be called, has been in a wheelchair from birth. After her granddaughter collided with the student Tsuneo on one of her rare walks, the 80-year-old hired the young man. He’s supposed to take care of Josie during the day. The prospective marine biologist, who is saving up for his study abroad in Mexico, gratefully accepts the job. But after a month he has had enough of the impudent young woman. But he wants to fulfill one last wish before he quits – and accompanies her to the sea …

As a big slice of life fan, I have been looking forward to the film since the announcement of its German cinema premiere. Now I can indeed say that I left the cinema satisfied. I especially liked the beautiful animations from the studio BONES and liked the atmosphere of the film.

Nevertheless, the movie also has a few points that are worthy of criticism. Among other things, the presentation was often too bold for me personally. While the content-related “A Silent Voice” depicts the protagonists’ feelings in a more subtle way, here one has the impression that the producers wanted to relieve the viewer of some of the “interpretive work”. In “Josie, the Tiger and the Fish”, the intentions and emotions of the characters are practically always clear. Josie in particular has clear Tsundere traits and is quite easy to see through.

Despite all this, the flick can build up a considerable emotional impact. A particularly decisive scene contributes to this, which is quite unexpectedly let loose on the viewer. But romance fans should also get their money’s worth with «Josie», as the film offers some wonderful moments in this regard. Especially the ending, which leaves little to be desired, left a positive impression on me.

Last but not least, I can also say that the German dubbed version has done a very solid job. I had to get used to Julia Bautz’s voice color on Josie, but after these first minutes the skepticism was gone. So the film was able to sweep me away thanks to the very good acting, among other things.

“Josie, the Tiger and the Fish” is an emotional slice-of-life film that accompanies Josie through the challenges that she encounters as a paraplegic person. The movie has a rather slow narrative style and aims to build up emotions and feelings also in a romantic way.

«Josie» manages that quite well, because you can establish a connection with the protagonists right from the start and empathize with what they are experiencing. It’s a roller coaster of emotions with a deeper message and characterful personalities, each with their own vibe. While Josie initially liked Taiga from «Toradora!» remembers (also in the context of the “tiger” in the film title), one recognizes a development especially in the second half of the film, which puts its own stamp on it.

The convincing plot is accompanied by equally strong animations, a solid soundtrack and a well-done German synchronization.

For me the film was never boring, even if the end with a bit of dramaturgy convinced me even more than the beginning of the film. Overall, however, it is a well-rounded oeuvre, the strength of which is only revealed when you have been able to enjoy the film over its entire length.

When I first watched the trailer for “Josie, the Tiger and the Fish”, I initially thought that the film was about a run-of-the-mill love story with a very annoying protagonist. The film, however, showed far more than it initially appeared. From the beginning, the film shows that Josie, because of her handicap, has solidified deeper emotions that made her act strange in some situations (e.g. when she constantly gave condescending orders to Tsuneo). But the more the film revealed characters, backgrounds and personal stories, the more one could immerse oneself in the film. The whole storytelling was also very nice and told the story at exactly the right pace. This – in combination with the wonderful animations – was able to get closer to the protagonists emotionally. Individual elements of the film were, however, too unsuitable (whether it was exaggerated drama or inappropriate behavior of a person) for this film to pass as a completely thought-out masterpiece. Still, the film sparked emotions in the whole auditorium, was overall beautiful to watch and it was really fun to watch this film. The German synchronization was just as noticeable as the musical background.
