#Our opinion on «Detective Conan: The Halloween Bride»

“Our opinion on «Detective Conan: The Halloween Bride»

After the 25th “Detective Conan” movie was shown in advance on May 20 as part of a fan premiere in a few cities, “The Halloween Bride” has now also had its regular theatrical release as part of the KAZÉ Anime Nights 2022. But could the latest cinema adventure of the little master detective convince us? You read that here!

This is what the movie is about:

Miwako Sato and Wataru Takagi are about to tie the knot when suddenly someone disrupts the ceremony and injures Wataru trying to protect his bride. Miwako is reminded of a past situation when her partner Jinpei was killed in a bomb attack – and the man responsible has now escaped from prison…coincidence? Conan, who is also present at the wedding ceremony, doesn’t believe in coincidences and sets out to solve this new case!

The shuffling Kogoro

According to the motto “Every year again”, of course, 2022 must not do without a Conan film either: to be honest, many of the newer movies have already disappointed me – including the previous 24th film – I have my expectations for the now 25th cinema spin-off kept low. After my visit to the cinema, however, I was able to determine that my verdict was better than I had previously thought. I especially liked the funny scenes that made the cinema laugh. And the flick also has a few nice moments in store for fans of Sato and Takagi. But it should be said right away that you shouldn’t judge the film based on its trailer. Many of the scenes shown are “blown away” in the first few minutes of the film and are far less spectacular overall than one might think.

In general, it has meanwhile become a question of one’s own taste as to whether one finds the obligatory action scenes exciting or rather amusing. After all: when escaping from a building, even Conan gets a little frustrated, which in my opinion suits him better for a change than consistently miming the tough action hero. Regarding the plot, it can be said that it was linked to Matsuda’s past in a very successful way and thus does not degenerate into pure name dropping. Apart from that, the flick also brings some new characters into play, of course. Since it’s not entirely clear who’s on which side until the very end, a few twists and turns were also incorporated, which were sometimes more, sometimes less surprising. Overall, however, “The Halloween Bride” fortunately didn’t suffer from an overly complex plot like Film 22, so I was able to follow the plot reasonably well.

The German synchronization can of course convince as usual. The Russian-language passages were particularly noticeable here, some of which apparently were spoken by native speakers. But the German speakers also made an effort, at least visibly, to present their Russian dialogue parts for the best. Apart from that, it is also very commendable that Matsuda was able to win his original series voice artist Matti Klemm. The situation is different with the bomber from season 4, which was then set to music by Thomas Petruo. Since he died in 2018, a new cast had to be found here, which is bearable due to the character’s short appearance.

The trailers already showed that the little detective’s latest cinematic flick revolves around a whole new topic: Halloween. The film begins with a marriage between Takagi and Sato, which quickly turned out to be an exercise. At the same time as the wedding, Amuro was given a bomb collar before the intro began in a new style and without 3D animation. Some innovations compared to the last films are already visible here. You can tell that this time the producers took 2 years to try out a lot of new things. In addition, Yugo Kanno composed the music for the film, replacing Katsuo Ono for the first time.

In the course of the story there were always action-packed scenes, which were cool but typically very unrealistic. In addition, there were always small funny scenes that loosened up the whole thing a bit. The storyline between Amuro and the four deceased friends was retold over and over in flashbacks. The dynamic between them was particularly cool because you can tell how well they know each other and how they function as a team. A group of Russian civilians banded together to capture and destroy the perpetrator, Plamya. This storyline also offered a lot of surprises and triggered all sorts of emotions that, for example, show Conan from a completely different side.

Nonetheless, I wished for a little more spooky and Halloween, since it was all there, but stood out rather close to the finale. Also, Amuro’s bomb collar played a minor role, as initially suggested thanks to the movie poster, which was a bit disappointing. The music, on the other hand, was fresh, new, suited the scenes very well and really convinced me. Towards the end, the linking of image and sound was fine, but it also seemed a bit obsessive when “Kimi ga Ireba” was integrated.

The German dubbing was just great, as always. Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about the linguistic quality of Russian, but in principle it seemed quite good to an outsider. In addition, all available regular speakers were there again, including those from the supporting characters such as Matsuda and Hagiwara. Overall, “Detective Conan: The Halloween Bride” is an action-packed, suspenseful film that presents the Conan film series in a slightly different light than usual. The typical elements are still preserved in its basic features.

The latest film “Detective Conan: The Halloween Bride” made it to Germany after just under a year. Since I wasn’t that satisfied with the last few films, I was curious to see how this year would turn out.

The setting at the beginning was a bit unusual this time and therefore all the more interesting: Takagi and Sato are getting married! But before they can say yes, armed men attack the wedding couple. At the same time, Toru Amoru is shown with his colleague waiting for someone in the car. When the person appears, they both start running, unaware that they are not alone. It appears that this is related to bomb disposal technician Jinpei Matsuda, who died defusing a bomb a few years ago.

I really liked the story in the film and it seemed very well thought out. In the previous films, the plot seemed too simple to me, so there was a lack of suspense. This time there was no problem. In addition, the viewer was also able to learn more about the characters, especially with regard to Jinpei Matsuda. This is one of the passages that I particularly liked. Appropriate flashbacks gave the film an unexpected tension and ensured that the outcome of the plot was not necessarily obvious. Especially the motives of some characters were very understandable and gave the figures a special depth. Of course, at the end there was again an exaggerated finale in my opinion, but at least Ran wasn’t in danger again, as is almost always the case. A conclusive ending.

«Detective Conan: The Halloween Bride» definitely stands out from its predecessors and goes in a good direction. For this reason, I would like to see such plots more often, which do not necessarily always have to be littered with action. In my opinion, the actual plot is the focus and should be well thought out. The music also seemed new to me, but very fitting and appropriate to the film. As always, the German dubbing was at a very high level and had almost all the old voice actors at the start.

The little detective is back on the big screen! The 25th film in the Detective Conan franchise also impresses with its likeable characters, an exciting mystery case and a good portion of action. Even if this again disregards any physical rules in the last third, it is used more sparsely than in the previous film offshoots.

In my opinion, the right decision, since the film takes more time for its different characters and their motivations. Especially fans of the police couple around Miwato Sato and Wataru Takagi will get their money’s worth. Keyword police: the group around the deceased bomb disposal technician Jinpei Matsuda and the security police agent Toru Amoru are also in focus. One thing is certain: fans of the sympathetic police force will not be able to resist the grin from time to time.

Film 25 gets several things right. Although there are always cross-references to older events from the anime, “The Halloween Bride” still stands on its own two feet and tells its story detached from the main plot. In this way, the film retains its identity, despite all sorts of guest appearances. At the same time, the offshoot succeeds in skilfully weaving the various storylines together without losing track of things. Especially the last films of the franchise had to struggle with sometimes confusing narratives. Nice to see that Film 25 doesn’t fall into that trap. In addition, the newly introduced characters in particular are peppered with tragic pasts and understandable motivations, which give the film an unexpected depth.

Conan fans who had fun with the first 24 films will also be well entertained in this film. The opponent’s actual motivation remains largely a mystery and the breakneck action is, as always, a matter of taste. But at the latest when the little detective in the climax of the film his catchphrase “Conan Edogawa. Ich bin Detektiv” unleashes on the audience, even the last inconsistency is forgotten. In short: great fun that Conan fans should definitely not miss.

A little tip: the end of the film holds a little surprise, so stay tuned to the end!
