Orange Inc. Launches Emaqi Manga App in North America

Orange Inc. has announced the launch of the new manga app emaqi in the U.S. and Canada. The new app is now available to download on the iOS App and Google Play store

The emaqi app will feature over 13,000 manga volumes from several major Japanese publishers, around 1,700 series, and nearly 50 exclusive titles, with more titles on the way. Some of the titles come from publishers such as VIZ Media, Kodansha USA, Yen Press, Akita Shoten, Futabasha, Shonen Gahosha, Nihon Bungeisha, COAMIX, and more.

Among the 50 exclusive titles available on emaqi include Anjo the Mischievous Gal, The Vampire Dies in No Time, and Liverleaf. Orange Inc. also confirmed that 100 never-before-translated manga series will be added to the app by the end of 2025.

Some of the emaqi app’s features include:

“Dig”

Browse casually within the app by progressing through personalized recommended works with vertical swipes and quickly switching between different works with horizontal swipes.

Personalized Recommendations

Based on the titles previously read, personalized recommendations will appear on the home screen and “Dig” screen, allowing readers to discover new works.

Personalized Bookshelf

Quickly access reading history, purchased works, and favorites in the app.

Automatic Text Enlargement Feature (Coming Soon)

A smartphone-optimized reading experience in development that allows for the adjustment of text size without interfering with the manga’s speech bubble frames, original art, and expressions.

Orange Inc. is also offering a limited-time campaign to celebrate the launch of the emaqi app, running from May 28, 2025, at 9:00 AM EST to July 8, 2025 at 11:59 PM EDT. The campaign offers are listed as follows:

  • • Read up to three volumes for free from 10 of VIZ Media’s most popular series like Naruto, My Hero Academia, One Piece, and more.
  • • Enjoy all emaqi-exclusive translated titles with a “Wait Until Free” model — unlock one chapter every 23 hours at no cost.
  • • Get 50% coin-back on purchases, up to 25,000 coins per user.

Emaqi works by using a pay-per-title model with in-app purchases on the App Store and Google Play Store. It also includes free and accessible content, where selected titles offer a “Wait Until Free” system, allowing readers to unlock one chapter every 23 hours at no cost. After finishing the free chapters, users can purchase the remaining chapters. Additionally, one-shot titles are available to read for free in their entirety.

Anime News Network wrote in May 2024 that Orange Inc. was launching emaqi as an e-bookstore service in Summer 2024. The company was reported to have used AI technology to do base Japanese-to-English translation, with native speaking translators and editors correcting the translation and finalizing the work. It also aimed to “increase localization capacity by 10 or 100 times” from its current state.

The emaqi e-bookstore service was then made available in the U.S. and Canada in September 2024, where it announced a partnership with Shueisha to localize and release one-shot manga titles from Shonen Jump+ in English several times a week.

Orange Inc. again confirmed with Anime News Network that it will continue to “leverage AI-assisted translation to support [its] in-house team of approximately 20 human translators” and that “no more than 10 percent of the content on emaqi will be translated using AI support at launch.” The company stated at the time that it would continue to evaluate its approach in the future.
