“One Piece Film Red is Japan’s 29th Highest-Grossing Movie”

One Piece Film Red has become Japan’s 29th highest-grossing movie with a box office revenue of 11.45 billion yen (~US$82.7 million), as listed on Kogyo Tsushin’s all-time ranking.

The movie also remained in first place for the fourth consecutive week at the August 27-28 weekend ranking. It made 1.2 billion yen (~US$8.67 million) during this time.

One Piece Film Red was released in Japan on August 6. It passed the 10 billion yen mark on August 25, making it the fastest 2022 movie to do so.

One Piece Film Red is the 15th movie in the One Piece anime franchise. It is directed by Gorou Taniguchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;SurrectionOne Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Gyanzakku) with Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece Film: Gold, GANTZ:O) as scriptwriter, Masayuki Satou (One Piece Film Strong World character designer and animation director) as character designer and chief animation director, and One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda as general producer and original story creator. 

The film features a major new character called Uta (Kaori Nazuka; singing voice Ado), a diva who is also Shank’s daughter. Animated music videos featuring Uta’s songs from the Uta no Uta One Piece Film Red album were released before and after the movie’s release. The first music video, “New Genesis,” has gained over 43 million views since its June 15 premiere at the time of writing.
