#Off-duty cop fatally shoots man in NYC, police say

An off-duty NYPD officer shot a man dead in The Bronx early Sunday morning after he and another cop spotted him firing his gun — leading the shooter’s father to grab his gun and fire it at the pair of officers, a top NYPD official said.

Two officers had just gotten off duty and were walking on Valentine Avenue and E 180th Street in The Bronx, just a block away from the 46th Precinct station, when they encountered a man firing at a victim, according to the NYPD.

After the officers confronted the suspect, he fired “several times” at the duo of off-duty cops, prompting one of the them to shoot the 24-year-old man at 4:15 a.m., NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said during a press conference at the scene.

“The officers returned fire, which struck the 24-year-old male in torso,” she said.

The wounded 24-year-old’s father, a 45-year-old man, then picked up his son’s gun and “fired rounds at the officers” with it, Holmes said. The first shooter’s uninjured father was taken into custody, according to Holmes.

The extent of the father’s involvement in the original “dispute with a group of people” before cops came to confront the shooter was unclear.

Video from the scene, 2080 Valentine Ave. in Fordham Heights, shows a maroon Honda Odyssey that appeared to be hit with gunfire, with three shell casings next to the vehicle.

The 24-year-old shooter was taken by medics to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Holmes. The pair of police officers, who were not struck by gunfire, were treated for tinnitus at Jacobi Medical Center, the NYPD said.

Police didn’t find the shooter’s gun but have video that shows the weapon being handed off to another person, a police spokesman said.
