#NYPD cops skip masks during disaster-prep drill

Well they weren’t drilling for a pandemic, that’s for sure.

Scores of cops descended on Randall’s Island Monday for a disaster-prep drill — with barely any in the tightly packed crowd wearing face masks, photos show.

Only three out of the more than 100 in a sea of blue can be seen properly donning the protective gear, despite being huddled closely together during the drill, photos from the scene show.

Hours later, photos emerged of the latest NYPD academy class — depicting an overwhelming number officers wearing no or improper face coverings.

In one of the shots, nearly 70 of the rookies aren’t wearing any face coverings as they sit side-by-side listening to Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch, who is also maskless.

City Council members have repeatedly harped on the NYPD for ignoring mask directives — something brass brushed off at a hearing earlier this month.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, called on municipalities to get their cops to enforce mask orders during a radio appearance Monday afternoon.

“They have to enforce the compliance and their police department has to do it,” Cuomo said told WAMC with Alan Chartock.

The masks prevent wearers from transmitting coronavirus to others, and the NYPD’s official directive is for officers to wear some sort of face-covering to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

That sparked a heated exchange between Chief of Department Terence Monahan and city’s health commissioner in March.

Monahan — the highest-ranking uniformed cop — has been previously caught with his mask down multiple times, shaking hands and kneeling with protesters, despite the directive.

A spokeswoman for the department conceded that the officers should have been wearing masks “but the objective of this drill was emergency response and that is what we sought to measure.”

“The focus was to get our officers to the location and set up as quickly as possible,” the spokeswoman said.

The officers were practicing a level 4 mobilization — the city’s highest level of disaster response — which has not been used outside of training since the 9/11 terror attacks.

The PD did not immediately address, though, the lack of face coverings at the academy.

Nearly 6,000 officers have contracted the virus and it has claimed the lives of 46 uniformed and civilian members.
