NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said Thursday “a lot of gang activity” is fueling the recent wave of shootings throughout the city.

His comments on “Good Day New York” came a day after 12 people were shot across the city in seven separate shootings — and hours after several more were struck by gunfire just in the early hours Thursday.

“Oh yeah, this is a lot of gang activity going on right now,” the chief said. “That’s what we’re seeing. Different gangs attacking the areas of other gangs. So we are working on dealing with these hotspots, dealing with these individuals, and we are out making arrests and we’re going to continue to make arrests.”

The highest-ranking uniformed member of the NYPD also said the department would “have to adapt” to the disbanding of its anti-crime unit last month.

“The NYPD has for the last 30 years made adaptations to how we police,” he said. “And we’re going to come up with new strategies targeting individuals, get strong prosecutions on them, put away the few violent individuals on the street and make sure they stay away.”

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea also dismissed criticism of the unit’s disbanding on CNN Thursday, calling the knocks “talking points.”
