#NYPD botched case involving abuse of boy weeks before death

The NYPD was alerted to possible abuse of a 4-year-old Brooklyn boy just weeks before the tot died — but botched the case by not doing a thorough enough investigation, The Post has learned.

Jaycee Eubanks’ daycare called cops on Aug. 26 after the boy and his 6-year-old brother complained to childcare workers about a scratch to one of their ears and a bruise on the other’s shoulder, police sources said.

The Special Victims Division officers interviewed the siblings — but wrote off the complaint without following protocols that would have spurred a follow-up with the family, according to a source with knowledge of the case.

“They failed to schedule a forensic pediatrician examination on the kids,” the source said. “They failed to talk to neighbors. They failed to submit a domestic incident report. If they did, a domestic violence officer would have visited.”

Less than three weeks later, little Jaycee was dead and the boy’s stepfather was in custody.

After the child died Sunday morning, neighbors told police the older boy had told them that the stepdad had assaulted Jaycee at some point.

The child’s mother flagged down cops around 5 a.m. that morning outside her home on Baltic Street in Gowanus — with the Jaycee’s lifeless body in her arms.

Officer tried to revive the boy and rushed him to Brooklyn Hospital, where he died.

Police took the stepfather, whose name was not released, into custody for questioning. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday.

“The investigation will determine how this child died and what the stepfather’s [possible] role was in it,” a police spokesman said at the time.

Authorities said a 911 caller told police the stepfather was trying to kill himself at the address around the same time.

The NYPD did not immediately respond for comment.

A spokeswoman for New York City Administration for Children’s Services declined to comment on the specifics of the case.

“Our top priority is protecting the safety and wellbeing of all children in New York City. We are investigating this case with NYPD and we have taken action to secure the safety of the other child in the home,” the spokeswoman said.
