It looks like New York City is going all-in on electric vehicles. Earlier this month, we reported on the Ford Mustang Mach-E joining taxi fleets, and now it looks like the NYPD is doing the same. This week, the City announced it had bought 184 Mustang March-E vehicles for the police department and emergency services.

Not only did the New York Police Department order a bunch of Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles, but it also approved a plan to potentially add 250 Tesla EVs to its ever-expanding fleet in 2022.

Earlier this month, reports surfaced that the NYPC was preparing to buy a bunch of Tesla’s, but it looks like the Ford Mustang Mach-E won the bid, at least for now. Of course, being an SUV, the Mach-E has plenty of space for criminals in the back, plus most NYPD orders are for the performance edition that gets 260 miles per charge and can go from 0-60 in only 3.5 seconds.

Good luck outrunning the Mustang Mach-E on the streets of New York City. Here’s the announcement with a few more details:

“Today the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) announced that it is placing an order for 184 all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E Sport Crossover Utility Vehicles for law enforcement and emergency response use. The new electric crossovers, purchased as part of the City’s largest electric vehicle (EV) purchase to date, are slated for use by the New York Police Department (NYPD), the New York City Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Correction, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Environmental Protection, NYC Emergency Management, DCAS Police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The new electric vehicles will replace gas-powered vehicles currently in the City fleet. The new all-electric crossovers will be received by the City by June 30, 2022.”

According to Electrek, the NYPD has officially ordered the Mach-E and will take delivery in mid-2022. That said, this is likely only just the first of many, considering it operates nearly 30,000 vehicles across several departments. Plus, the City plans to order nearly 1,300 EVs throughout 2022.

As we said earlier, the announcement today confirms these vehicles are on the books but also opens up the option to add Teslas to the fleet in the future. The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services can order up to 250 Tesla vehicles at any time within the next five years but will likely do that in 2022.

It’s no surprise that Ford beat Tesla to the bid, as Ford vehicles are some of the country’s most widely used police vehicles. But, with electric cars starting to take over, we’ll see how well Ford can keep up.
