#NYC woman killed in Maine shark attack loved volunteer work, running marathons

The New York City fashion executive killed in a great white shark attack in Maine was remembered for her love of golfing, gardening and volunteering in an obituary published Thursday.

More details of Julie Dimperio Holowach’s life emerged in the online tribute posted by The Times Record.

“She loved all things botanical, daily tending to her gardens in Maine and volunteering at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, and the Naples Botanical Gardens in Naples, Fla.,” the obituary says.

The 63-year-old mom of two, who grew up in Morris Park in the Bronx, also enjoyed running, and competed in two New York City marathons, as well as half marathons and even a triathlon.

She also “enjoyed golfing with family and friends, travelling and organized a wine and golf group in Maine” and volunteered cooking meals at the Harpswell Aging Home, the obituary continues.

Holowach attended Cardinal Spellman High School before heading to the Fashion Institute of Technology.

She and her husband of 25 years, Al Holowach, split their time between Naples, Florida in the winter and Harpswell, Maine in the summer.

Holowach, the president of Kipling Bags, died Monday after being attacked by a great white shark while swimming with her daughter off Bailey Island.

Officials believe the shark may have mistaken Holowach, who was wearing a black wet suit, for a seal — a favorite food of the underwater predator.

Holowach’s sister-in-law, Jill Holowach, also paid tribute online.

“There simply are no words to convey the devastation and heartbreak we all feel losing such a huge part of our heart and lives. Julie simply was the best!” Jill tweeted in part, with the post continuing to a private Instagram page.

Holowach’s private funeral will be held Friday.

She leaves behind her husband and two children Dean and Alexandra.
