“#NYC to project faces of COVID-19 victims on Brooklyn Bridge tonight”
New York City is holding a memorial service Sunday night to remember those lost to COVID-19 — which will include musical performances and faces of the dead projected onto the Brooklyn Bridge.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray will host the virtual event, which the city said marks the day its first known coronavirus fatality was confirmed.
The service, titled “A COVID-19 Day of Remembrance,” is set to begin at 7:45 p.m. and streamed live on the city’s website, as well as the mayor’s Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts.
The New York Philharmonic will perform at the service, as will Bishop Hezekiah Walker and The Love Fellowship Choir, the city said.
Several religious leaders including Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik and Imam Abdul Azeez are expected to speak, also.
Images of New Yorkers killed by the virus will be projected on the bridge throughout the service, the city said.
“Tonight, we honor the lives lost to this horrible pandemic and join together as a city to mourn, heal and look toward a brighter future,” the mayor said in a statement.
“Voices from across the city will join as one to stand in solidarity and demonstrate how we remain strong, hopeful and determined.”
