“#NYC mayoral candidate McGuire supports lifting charter-school cap”
Democratic mayoral candidate Ray McGuire wants to expand the number of New York City charter schools, he told The Post on Sunday.
“We need to give our children the best education possible. I want to give parents a choice,” the ex-Citigroup executive said while accepting the endorsement of Rep. Greg Meeks, the Queens Democratic leader.
“No child’s future should be determined by their zip code. I want the best quality education in district schools, magnet schools, parochials, charter schools,” he said.
“I want the best education for kids in any form — by whatever means necessary.”
McGuire’s support for charter schools puts him at odds with many of his Democratic opponents; including Andrew Yang, Eric Adams, Scott Stringer and Maya Wiley — all of whom expressed support for the existing cap during a teachers’ union forum earlier this month, Gotham Gazette reported. Adams and Yang said they support adding new charter schools but only by reviving failed schools with existing licenses.
Incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio is a longtime charter school antagonist.
McGuire appeared Sunday outside Queens Borough Hall with Meeks and a group of about 150 supporters that included new endorsers State Sen. Leroy Comrie and Assemblywoman Vivian Cook.
The first-time candidate’s speech took not-so-subtle shots at Yang and career pols Adams and Stringer.
“There are candidates who are gimmicking like this is a game show. The situation in New York is serious,” he said. “There are candidates who have been running for decades, with well-documented government experience.”
“To them I say, you had your chance and look at where we are. To them I say, we’re tired of passing the buck… We’re tired of excuses.”
