#NY Blood Center calls on Irish community to find donor match

The New York Blood Center is urgently calling on the Irish community to find a donor match for a Princeton physician who spent most of his life in service to others.

Dr. Aiden Doyle was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and is now in “urgent” need of a stem-cell donation by the end of the month after he undergoes a second round of chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, said Jair Thompson of “Be the Match,” a program of the National Marrow Donor Program

“This is an emergency appeal on behalf of Dr. Doyle’s oncologists,” Thompson told The Post, adding that because patients are most likely to match with donors who share the same ethnic background, the group is reaching out to the Irish community. Doyle is of 100 percent Irish ancestry, he said.

Doyle, 76, a father of two and grandfather of three, grew up in Dublin and set up a free clinic for children suffering from spina bifida while he was still a medical student. In New York, he completed a residency in neurosurgery at NYU and Bellevue hospitals and has worked at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and St. Peter’s Medical Center in New Jersey.
