#No Way Home Post Credit Scenes and What They Prove For the Future of the MCU

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in cinemas and immediately became the biggest movie of the year. While there has been a lot of discussion about whether or not we will see Tom Holland playing the role again in the MCU, the now compulsory mid and post-credit scenes of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe offering sets up two big expansions of the ongoing story.

If you don’t know about those scenes and what they mean for the future, then spoiler warning.

Following the climax of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where all is seemingly put right other than the whole world not knowing who Peter Parker is, the mid-credit scene reveals a familiar face from another universe – Eddie Brock. Yes, Tom Hardy’s Venom character was rumored to appear in No Way Home and that was not a lie. The scene finds Brock at a bar, attempting to get his head around what is happening and why he has found himself in a universe where there are “big green guys” and “big purple guys”. The scene is fun and is a great little intriguing introduction to Venom for those who have not yet dipped into the Sony Universe of Spider-Man Characters, with Hardy clearly having a ball with the role. The scene ends with Brock being vaporized back into his own universe, which seems to suggest that the possible meeting between Venom and Spider-Man may not be able to happen after all. However, the final thing we are left with is a close-up of a small black blob left behind on the bar top, and as it starts to move we cut to the credits.

As far as the MCU goes, this means that we now have Venom within the MCU’s space and also have Tom Hardy’s version of the character back in his own Universe and able to appear in any of the upcoming Sony movies such as Morbius and Kraven The Hunter, as well as more solo movies. It would also seem that this means when we do get to see Venom appear in the MCU, as he is sure to do, it is not going to be Tom Hardy playing him but a brand new version of the symbiote and that could play an important part of the new Spider-Man movies when they do arrive.

Following this and another six minutes of credits comes the post-credit scene, the one usually reserved for quirky little scenes that have no real consequence or purpose, but not this time. This time, as rumored, those who remain are treated to the first trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While this trailer will no doubt find its way online reasonably soon, getting it at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home is something that Marvel hasn’t really done since they teased Avengers Assemble.

In the trailer, we hear Strange being told that he has been reckless in using the spell for Peter Parker and that he has done damage beyond anything he can comprehend. We see Strange pay a visit to Wanda Maximoff and enlist her to help him, and we get first look at the return of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, as well as America Chavez making her live-action debut portrayed by Xochitl Gomez. However, after many flashing images of one of the expected villains, fights, and more, we hear Ejiofor’s Mondo tell Strange that the biggest threat to the universe is himself as the Doctor comes face to face with a dark version of himself.

This is mind-blowing for two reasons. First, a 1992 comic storyline titled Strange Bedfellows involves Strange fighting the Necromancer, a copy of himself who is identical but for the fact, he killed Mordo before becoming Sorcerer Supreme. That story also happens to feature both Scarlett Witch and Agatha Harkness. With Agatha getting her own show on Disney+ could Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness be her way back into the MCU after the events of WandaVision? Second, fans who have watched What If…? on Disney+ will be aware of the dark Sorcerer Supreme that features in a number of the animated episodes.

There are many similarities to the version of Strange seen in the trailer, suggesting that once again Marvel is working hard to keep all of their properties connected.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is not released until May 6th, 2022, but you can almost feel the hype building right now.
