#Nikim Meekins back in jail after mistaken release from Rikers

A 22-year-old man charged with attempted murder who was accidentally released from Rikers Island is back behind bars.

Nikim Meekins returned to the jail at midnight with his attorney, Lucian Chalfen, a spokesman for the state’s court system, told The Post.

The suspect was arrested March 10 on a pair of felony charges connected to a shooting last summer and was held on $30,000 bail, according to court records.

He appeared in a Bronx courtroom Monday, when the bail was reduced to $1 — and a pending indictment on an attempted murder charge, a court spokesperson said.

But the clerk mistakenly marked Meekins to be released on the attempted murder case instead of being held on $300,000 bail, the spokesman said.

“The clerk annotated the paperwork as $1 bail on the gun case correctly but mistakenly indicated ROR on the attempted murder case,” he said.

The judge issued a bench warrant for Meekins after being told of the error.

Peter Thorne, a spokesman for the city Department of Correction, said in a statement that “based on the documentation provided by the courts, the release from custody was proper and in accordance with our policy.”

Last week, it also emerged that a clerical error led to the release of 26-year-old Christopher Buggs, who was awaiting trial in a 2018 Brooklyn murder.
