#New York voters said no to the local progressive agenda

New York voted strongly for Joe Biden this election — yet rejected a lot of other Democrats. In legislative and congressional races, Republicans look set to make significant gains.

Final results will take a week or more to come in, but Empire State voters plainly aren’t buying anti-cop and pro-tax policies.

On Staten Island, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis seems to have flipped a House district won two years ago by freshman Democrat Rep. Max Rose.

On Long Island, Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin held his seat, while Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino is in a close race in the district vacated by Rep. Peter King.

Rep. John Katko appears to have held on in his central New York House district, while fellow Republican Claudia Tenney may well retake the seat she lost to Rep. Anthony Brindisi in 2018.

Meanwhile, GOP candidates stand poised to take several state Senate seats from the Democrats, ousting incumbents in five districts, while Democrats hold leads in two seats where Republicans retired.

Assembly Republicans also gained big; Minority Leader Will Barclay will add at least 11 new members to his conference’s ranks in January.

State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy called Tuesday’s vote “a rebuke for a leftwing” agenda in Albany that included measures like the “no bail” law. Indeed, it’s clear that lots of Democrats as well as independents — even in parts of New York City — reject the radical agenda pushed by the Legislature’s majority.

New York Republicans owe President Trump a debt of gratitude and need to send the state Legislature’s socialist caucus dozens of red roses.
