Star-struck Jacquelyn Asbie, 31, escorted the former vice president in the elevator of the Times’ Midtown office as he headed to a meeting with the editorial board in January, ahead of their primary endorsement.
“I love you,” she had told Biden. “I do. You’re like my favorite.”
The pair then snapped a selfie together. The fleeting exchange — captured in the Times’ FX show “The Weekly” — was enough to snag Asbie a spot at the televised convention.
“Joe Biden has room in his heart for more than just himself,” she said.
“We’ve been through a lot,” Asbie said, “and we have tough days ahead. But nominating someone like that to be in the White House is a good place to start. That’s why I nominate my friend Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.”
The Times’ editorial board ended up endorsing Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren.
Sen. Chris Coons, who holds Biden’s former Senate seat, and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, also of Delaware, formally endorsed Biden as well.
