#New York Daily News appoints Andrew Julien executive editor

The New York Daily News said Friday it has appointed Andrew Julien as executive editor.

Julien had been overseeing the Daily News editorial department on an interim basis since September, after editor-in chief Robert York was ousted in a surprise shake up.

Most recently, Julien, 62, served as editor in chief and publisher of Daily News sibling paper The Hartford Courant where he worked for three decades.

“I am honored, humbled and thrilled,” Julien said. “The New York Daily News is a vital and vibrant part of the media landscape that hums each day with stories and photographs that engage and inform readers in the city and across the nation.”

Julien, who is relocating to New York, added: “Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the chance to see up close the passion and commitment of our journalists and it’s clear that everyone in the organization is deeply committed to our mission. We will continue to honor that commitment as we seek new readers — both in print and online. On a personal note, it’s great to be heading back to the city where I grew up.”

Daily News owner Tribune Publishing said that MediaNews Group Regional publisher Kevin Corrado will take over business operations at the Courant on an interim basis and begin the search for a new editor.

Julien’s new gig helming the 102-year-old paper comes as insiders blame ruthless cost-cutting by the paper’s new hedge-fund owner, Alden Global Capital.

At the time of York’s departure, sources told The Post that Alden was looking to cut corners and run the paper on a razor-thin budget, adding that Julien’s hire was a way for the paper to keep the paper running on the cheap.

York had acted more like a publisher, according to insiders who said that Julien’s role will likely not deviate much from that as the paper is effectively run by managing editor Robert Dominguez,

One source explained that Alden’s vision for the Daily News appears to be running the paper with “a few dozen minions” that report into a “corporate manager.”
