Dinwiddie, who won’t play in the NBA restart after testing positive for coronavirus, tweeted support for Wojnarowski early Sunday morning while having fun with Woj’s news-breaking rivalry with The Athletic’s Shams Charania by comparing it to a singers’ beat battle.
#FreeWoj (Black fist emoji) but in the #Verzuz battle I’m taking @ShamsCharania,” Dinwiddie wrote.
The #FreeWoj hashtag trended as high as No. 3 on Twitter after news of Wojnarowski’s suspension broke late Saturday night. Former Knicks center Enes Kanter, now with the Celtics, also chimed in by tweeting a GIF of Thanos’ army assembling in the movie “Avengers: Endgame” and wrote: “#NBATwitter finding out @espn suspended Woj #freeWoj.” Clippers guard Lou Williams simply tweeted, “Aye #Freewoj man (crying face emojis).” Grizzlies forward Anthony Tolliver also showed support.
Wojnarowski’s suspension stemmed from his profane response to an email from Sen. Hawley. Hawley, who posted a screenshot of the exchange on Friday, had emailed a mass letter that was critical of NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the league’s relationship with China. Wojnarowski, who earlier got support from ESPN colleague Maria Taylor, apologized soon after.
It is unclear how long the 51-year-old Wojnarowski will be suspended for with the league gearing up to restart its season at Disney World later this month.
