#Netflix’s ‘Captains of the World’ Trailer Relives Thrills and Heartbreak of 2022 World Cup

Last year’s World Cup is proving to have legs, as Netflix shared the first trailer for its forthcoming soccer-centric series Captains of the World.

The streaming giant and FIFA+ are behind the six-episode project launching Dec. 30, going behind the scenes of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament that took place in November and December of that year. Produced by Fulwell 73, Captains of the World is a follow-up to the 2022 series Captains, which documented players’ efforts as their teams fought to qualify for the highly anticipated sports event that took place in Qatar.

Released Friday, the trailer highlights some of the footage and exclusive interviews featured in the new series. Among the notable figures offering insight throughout Captains of the World are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Simon Kjær.

“This is a World Cup, and it’s really tough,” Messi tells the camera at one point. “We’re going to fight.”

Elsewhere in the trailer, Ronaldo makes no secret of his focus in the tournament: “Everybody wants to win.”

The 2022 World Cup final took place Dec. 18, 2022, with Messi’s home nation of Argentina defeating Mbappé’s French squad in penalty kicks. Messi, who currently stars on the Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, was awarded the Golden Ball as the best overall player.

Netflix has released a number of sports documentaries in recent years, including Quarterback, which debuted earlier in 2023 and focused on NFL standouts Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota. It is also home to the popular racing series Formula 1: Drive to Survive.
