#Netflix: Is K-drama The Good Bad Mother worth watching?

Following the two strong K-dramas The Glory Season 2 and The Queenmaker, Netflix released a healing K-drama last April, The Good Bad Mother. The show follows Reply 1988’s Ra Mi-Ran, and 18 Again’s Lee Do-Hyun as they heal their emotionally strained relationship following an accident.

The show touches upon complex human emotions such as resentment as it depicts the hardships of a mother who compromises her son’s childhood to prepare him for surviving society’s problems. Will the two overcome their distance to heal their wounded heart? Netflix explores the answer in its ongoing slice-of-life K-drama.

Netflix’s The Good Bad Mother promises a slice-of-life K-drama

The JTBC K-drama begins with establishing the backstory of the two protagonists. It introduces a newly married pig farmers couple preparing to welcome their first child when a ruthless conglomerate, Song Woo-Byeok (Choi Moo-Sung), uproots their family for their land in the backdrop of the 1988 Olympics.

  • Following the mysterious suicide of the father, the widowed mother, Young-Soon (Ra Mi-Ran), shifts to another village to raise her son Choi Kang-Ho (Lee Do-Hyun). Due to the feeling of unfairness from the corrupt system, she aspires to provide a platform for her child by making him a successful prosecutor. However, following her aspirations, she sacrifices Kang-Ho’s childhood.
  • Young-Soon becomes a stubborn and relentless mother, teaching her son lessons of life and academy likewise. She disciplines and bans him from eating a full meal to avoid drowsiness. She further eliminates all the hints of childhood, such as school trips, to make Kang-Ho focus on climbing the professional ladder.
  • This strong discipline from his mother leads to Choi Kang-Ho developing resentment against her. He approaches his profession with a bitter harshness and fails to empathize. He also attempts to cut all ties with his mother due to his complicated emotions. However, fate provides them another chance to restart their relationship and heal past wounds.
  • As such, the Netflix drama, The Good Bad Mother promises an emotionally driven plot that also depicts the corruption of society and the underdogs’ battle to seek justice. And with these themes, The Good Bad Mother is undoubtedly a must-see.

Dynamic writing and strong performances make Netflix’s The God Bad Mother worth streaming

The Good Bad Mother‘s writer Bae Se-Young presents the emotionally driven story in its rawness. She doesn’t try to justify any actions of the protagonists and realistically offers their strained bonds, which the lead actors impressively perform.

  • As the ‘helicopter parent,’ Ra Mi-Ran portrays her motherly emotions while maintaining her un-motherly approach. She also successfully delivers complex human emotions that are hard to view in black or white extremities. Additionally, her tear-jerking acting of suffering and regrets over the past is commendable.
  • Lee Do-Hyun also revisits the small screens following his success with Netflix’s The Glory in a challenging role. He expresses the underlying need for motherly affection while maintaining his resentment towards his mother. Together, they weave a relatable and heartwarming relationship despite the bittersweet hints of the past.
  • Meanwhile, the director of The Good Bad Mother, Shim Na-Yeon, doesn’t try to villainize any of the actions of Young-Soon and Kang-Ho and believably presents them in a show-not-tell format. She also shows parallel stories of other eccentric mothers in the village, making the show dynamic with layers of human connections.

Now, to the main question: Is Netflix’s The Good Bad Mother worth watching? Definitely!

Currently, the streaming giant just released the fourth out of the 14 episodes to watch out for. The show is available and can be streamed on Netflix, with new episodes released every Wednesday and Thursday.
