#Warden reassigned, officers suspended after Rikers inmate’s escape attempts

A Rikers Island warden has been reassigned and six corrections officers were suspended on the heels of two high-profile escape attempts by an unruly inmate, sources and officials said Monday.

Kisa Smalls, the warden of the North Infirmary Command building, will now be assigned to Department of Correction Headquarters in Queens, according to law enforcement sources.

Six correction officers have also been suspended, jail officials confirmed.

The move comes after Arthur Brown, a 37-year-old inmate at the infirmary, hopped a rec-yard fence not once but twice since Thursday.

In the first bid at freedom, he clambered up a fence cordoning off a rooftop recreation area on the island’s George R. Vierno Center — then made a break for the East River — while he and his fellow inmates were on recreation time, sources said Thursday.

On Sunday, Brown scaled fencing at the facility and made it onto the roof before being nabbed by correction officers and fastened to a basket-style stretcher, sources told the Post.

On Monday, the head of the correction officers’ union called for DOC Commissioner Cynthia Brann, Deputy Commissioner Timothy Farrell, and Chief of Security Kenneth Stukes to step down for failing to secure the facility.

“Correction Officers aren’t responsible for the physical barriers that maintain security. So clearly these fences were inadequate for a long time and these upgrades were well overdue,” COBA President Elias Husamudeen said.
