#Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg to have season-ending surgery

Stephen Strasburg’s 2020 season is done after just five innings.

The Nationals right-hander will undergo season-ending surgery next week to address the carpal tunnel neuritis in his pitching hand, manager Dave Martinez told reporters on Saturday.

Strasburg, who signed a seven-year, $245 million contract last offseason after winning the World Series MVP, made just two starts this year before being shut down. His last one came on Aug. 14, when he lasted just 2/3 of an inning and then exited with the injury.

Saturday, the 32-year-old was placed on the 60-day injured list, officially ending his season. He had missed his first two starts of the shortened season after getting a cortisone injection for what was then described as a nerve issue in his hand. He told reporters at the time he had been dealing with it since coming back for spring training 2.0.
